The back story

About From the Singapore Sling to the rooftops: Singapore’s bars, the back story

Singapore’s bar story begins at Raffles, where the Long Bar says the Singapore Sling originated in 1915 (raffles.com). Today the city has hotel bars, shophouse cocktail bars and rooftops with the whole bay below.

The Singapore Sling

The Long Bar, in Raffles Arcade, is “where the Singapore Sling originated in 1915” (raffles.com).

Shophouse cocktail bars

Jigger & Pony is at Amara Singapore on Tanjong Pagar Road; 28 HongKong Street is in a shophouse near Boat Quay.

Start with a Sling at the Long Bar, then walk to Tanjong Pagar for the new guard.

On the bay and above it

Caffe Fernet sits in Customs House, facing Marina Bay; LeVeL33 brews its own beer on the 33rd floor of Marina Bay Financial Centre; CÉ LA VI is on the SkyPark at Marina Bay Sands.

Our advice: dress smart for the rooftops, and book at weekends.
